All in all, I would not venture back to Mastro's. I didn't appreciate how dark it was until I saw a server using a little flashlight to illuminate an elaborate food display at the table next to us. On a humorous note, the restaurant was pretty dark and very loud (even though I was sitting next to an open window). The servers and the 2 managers that visited our table were all attentive and hospitable. I don't think that I have every seen so many servers in one restaurant before. As far as the staff goes, the service was excellent. I had expected to indulge in a decadent dessert but the large dessert menu held nothing out of the ordinary. The low point was definitely the scalloped potatoes which were under cooked and gummy. Some of our meals were good, some just so-so. I ordered the crab cake appetizer for my entree. We had two appetizers, 5 entrees, and 2 sides. Our party of 5 celebrated my mother's birthday at Mastro's last month. There seems to be a common thread in these pricey, continental restaurants. Next time we are in Scottsdale we wont make the mistake of waiting until the last day, we will eat at Mastro's multiple times, and you should too! They were amazingly flavorful and tasted home made! My wife and I eat out a lot, and we both agreed this was in the top 5 dining experiences we have ever experienced. They almost melted in your mouth! For desert we decided to splurge.I ordered the butter cake and my wife ordered chocolate cake. Fork tender and cooked perfectly medium rare from edge to edge! My wife ordered crab legs that were sweet and tender. I ordered a bone in Ribeye that was in the top 5 steaks I have ever eaten. The sauce complimented the crab instead of overpowering it. Everything was outstanding! We had a crab cake for an appetizer that was wonderfully fresh tasting.
The staff at Mastro's were some of the best I have encountered in my years of eating out at fine dining establishments. From the time we were greeted until the time we walked out the door we were treated like regulars. After reading reviews on Opentable, we decided to head out to Mastro's Ocean club. It was my wife and I last night in Scottsdale and we were torn on whether we should hang out at the resort or head out for a place to eat.
